A kick start

Looking around, I wondered if anyone was as new to this as I am. Spread out across the room, students sat at 8am, looking like they already knew what hasn’t been said yet. I’ve been interested in and have played around with design for some time now, but being in my first Lecture- has somehow allowed me to see my practice, my abilities and the environment around me with fresh eyes.

The Lecturer said we will cover three assessment tasks during this second semester (which technically is my first). During this study I will get to explore critical contexts such as key historical moments in design history, along with topics covering things like Modernism and Post-Digital Design. It’s extraordinary to begin understanding how things in design have come to be how they are today. Visual Communication Design has so much more definition than what meets the eye.

Although the course has only just begun, we tend to not question the information thrown our way. As the lecturer says, “you as designers”- I question whether we are actually considered to be Designers yet, or are we better to be referred to as Designers in the Making. Being an artist, the slides reading “Art or Design?” has left me with an unanswered question that I hope to resolve for myself within my studies. I’m excited to continue this journey with design and see where it takes me.
